As a first production, HATCH decided to take over an apartment complex in Oakland and devise pieces based off the works of various Oakland poets. I was inspired by the poems of Samuel Steward an infamous queer libertine and early tattoo pioneer. Prior to moving to Oakland, Steward had been a closeted professor in the Midwest in the 40’s. He sublimated his desires by capturing in poetry the affairs he thought he would never have. We took the text of these poems and interpreted them in the long narrow basement of the apartment building adding drag, sailor outfits, a hazmat suit, 50 beer bottles and an accordion to create a nostalgic ode to Steward’s impossible loves.
